What Happens During a Professional Tree Removal


Tree removal looks simple from the outside — someone cuts a tree down, it falls, the crew cleans it up and leaves. The reality is significantly more involved, and understanding what actually happens during a professional removal helps you know what to expect and why it costs what it does. Here's a step-by-step look at how Fricke's Tree Service handles a typical tree removal.

The Assessment Comes First

Before any chainsaw comes out, a professional crew assesses the tree and the surrounding environment. They're looking at the tree's lean, its structural condition, the root zone, and what's nearby — structures, fences, vehicles, overhead lines, and neighboring properties. The goal is to identify the safest removal method, establish a work zone, and plan where each piece of the tree will fall or be lowered.

Not every tree can simply be felled in one direction. Trees near homes, over fences, or in tight spaces require sectional removal — taking the tree down piece by piece from the top, with each section rigged and lowered carefully. This is more time-intensive but essential for protecting property when there isn't a clear drop zone.

Rigging and Sectional Removal

For most residential jobs in Central Florida, climbers go up the tree with rope systems that allow them to control the direction and speed of each cut section as it's lowered to the ground. Large limbs are rigged before cutting so they don't fall freely — they're guided down, not dropped. This protects lawns, flowerbeds, fences, and anything else in the area.

As sections are removed from the top down, the trunk is cut into manageable lengths that can be safely lowered or controlled to the ground. The crew on the ground is constantly moving cut material, clearing the work zone, and communicating with the climber throughout the process. It's coordinated work that requires both skill and communication.

Stump Handling

Once the tree is down, the stump remains. Depending on what was agreed to in the estimate, the stump may be cut flush with the ground and left, ground below grade with a stump grinder, or (in rare cases on larger jobs) removed entirely. Stump grinding is typically a separate service that can be done during the same visit or scheduled for a follow-up.

Cleanup

A professional crew doesn't leave until the site is clean. Branches are chipped or hauled, logs are removed or stacked as specified, and the work area is blown or raked.
